BIO
Adam Costenoble is a Sydney-based emerging artist whose practise to date has focussed on video and interactive/user-dependant installation works, however, Costenoble considers himself a non-medium specific conceptual artist. A self confessed existentialist, Costenoble's work draws on philosophy, literature and cinema that contemplates the human condition and the human experience in the physical world. Building on the historical precedents of phenomenological inquiry, he attempts to set up avenues for viewers to engage with his work in a bodily, immersive and interactive fashion - recasting the viewer as an active participant. Costenoble's environments solicit in the viewer an affective response which, via sensory stimulation, facilitates a deeper cognitive impact and level of engagement. The viewer, implicated physically through their interaction, is also conceptually involved as they are subject to the very human condition at the core of his critique. Aesthetically Costenoble's moving-image work is often apocalyptic in nature, privileging doomsday settings that he considers only a slight exaggeration on current reality. Evoking the large-form action image proposed by the philosopher Gilles Deleuze, hopeless heroes are situated amidst composited 'big sky' landscapes filled with sonic tension and surreal unnatural juxtapositions.
